June 25, 2011 A Korean pharmaceutical company took a step closer to beginning commercial production of the world’s first stem cell therapy as the Korea Food and Drug Administration said yesterday the approval will be given next week. According to the administration, “Hearticellgram-AMI”, a stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction developed by FCB-Pharmicell, has passed all evaluations required for approval, including safety tests. Official approval will take place next Friday, the KFDA said. If that schedule is followed, Hearticellgram-AMI will become the world’s first stem cell therapy available commercially. FCB-Pharmicell applied for approval for the medication to the KFDA on November 26. Hearticellgram-AMI uses somatic stem cells extracted from the patient’s own body. The bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells will grow into heart tissue cells for regeneration of the patient’s damaged heart. The medication is injected into the heart directly through a coronary artery. While not all patients with heart disease are eligible for the treatment, the company said patients who underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention, more commonly known as coronary artery angioplasty surgery, will benefit from the new treatment. The entire treatment period, including the cultivating of stem cells from the patient and making them into therapies, will take about four weeks, according to the KFDA. Since 2005, the company has conducted clinical trials at major general hospitals around the country. “To give hope to patients with difficult diseases, we have invested about 30 billion won ($27.8 million) since 2002 on the research and development,” said Kim Hyun-soo, CEO of FCB-Pharmicell, which began the project in 2004. “We will do our best to have the perfect preparation so that the drug can be immediately available after the approval,” Kim said. According to the company, the treatment will cost about 10 million won. With news of the planned approval of the stem cell therapy, prices of the biotechnology companies’ stock jumped. [June 25, 2011 Korea JoongAng Daily/By Ser Myo-ja]         한글 관련 기사 [중앙일보]     심장 혈관에 ‘줄기세포 치료제’ 넣어 심근경색 고친다 식약청 ‘하티셀그램 - AMI’ 판매 내달 세계 첫 승인 국내 바이오 벤처기업이 세계 최초로 심근경색을 치료할 수 있는 줄기세포 치료제를 개발해 정부의 공식 허가를 눈앞에 두고 있다. 식품의약품안전청은 다음 달 초 줄기세포 치료제인 ‘하티셀그램-AMI’(에프씨비파미셀사 개발)의 시판을 허가할 예정이라고 24일 밝혔다. 그동안 피부·연골 등에 대한 세포 치료제는 여러 국가에서 허가됐으나 성체줄기세포를 이용한 세포 치료제를 허가하는 것은 세계 처음이다. 8월께 출시될 이 치료제의 값은 1000만원을 넘어설 것으로 예상된다. 개발업체는 미국 식품의약국(FDA)에도 허가 신청을 낼 예정이다. 　이 약은 심장에 영양·산소를 공급하는 관상동맥이 막힌 심근경색 환자의 엉덩이뼈 골수에서 채취한 소량의 혈액으로 만든다. 여기서 신경·뼈·연골 등으로 분화한 중간엽 줄기세포(성체줄기세포의 일종)를 뽑아내 3~4주 배양한다. 이 배양액을 손상된 심장혈관에 직접 주사해 심근경색 환자를 치료하게 된다. 지금까지 심근경색 환자는 스텐트(그물망) 시술에 이어 약물 치료를 받는 게 일반적이었다. 식약청 박윤주 첨단제제과장은 “줄기세포 치료제는 스텐트 시술 후 약물 치료 중인 심근경색 환자에게 적합하다”며 “임상 연구에서 줄기세포 치료제를 주사한 결과 심장 박출량이 증가한 것으로 나타나 시판을 허용키로 했다”고 말했다. 박 과장은 “부작용이 없는 약은 없으며 이번 줄기세포 치료제도 현기증 정도의 부작용은 있었다”며 “암을 유발하는지 여부에 대해서는 향후 재심사 과정을 통해 추적할 방침”이라고 덧붙였다. 　서울성모병원 순환기내과 김범준 교수는 “심근경색 환자는 일부 심장 근육이 죽으면 심장 박출량이 떨어지게 되고, 그로 인해 심장이 정상적으로 기능하지 못하는 심부전이 올 수 있다”며 “심장 박동수가 늘어나면 숨쉬기가 한결 편해질 것”이라고 예상했다. 심근경색은 협심증과 더불어 대표적인 심장병이다. 국내에서 해마다 신규 환자만 7만 명가량 발생한다. 　김현수(48·혈액내과 전문의) 에프씨비파미셀 대표는 “환자에게서 심근(心筋) 세포가 재생되는지는 확인하지 못했으나 동물실험에서는 심근세포의 기능이 회복됐다”고 말했다. 그는 “뇌졸중·척추마비 치료용 줄기세포 치료제도 현재 마지막 임상 단계가 진행되고 있다”고 덧붙였다. 아주대병원에서 근무하던 김 대표가 교수직을 접고 줄기세포 치료제 개발에 나선 것은 2004년부터다. 그는 “자연 상태에서는 극소량 존재하는 중간엽 줄기세포를 대량 배양하는 일이 난제였다”고 말한다. ◆줄기세포 치료제=신경·혈액·연골 등 몸을 구성하는 모든 기관으로 분화할 가능성이 있는 세포 다. 골수 등으로 만드는 성체줄기세포와 수정란으로 만드는 배아줄기세포가 있다. 줄기세포 치료제는 질병 치료를 위해 줄기세포를 이용하는 약이다.
