by Samuel Ulman/조동성 역 Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,  of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.  청춘이란 인생의 어느 한 기간을 말하는 것이 아니라 마음의 상태를 말한다. 그것은 장미빛 빰, 앵두같은 입술, 하늘거리는 자태가 아니라 강인한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타는 열정을 말한다. 청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘물에서 오는 신선한 정신, 유약함을 물리치는 용기, 안이를 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.   This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.  때로는 이십의 청년보다 육십이 된 사람에게 청춘이 있다. 나이를 먹는 다고 해서 우리가 늙는 것이 아니다. 이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다. 세월은 우리의 주름살을 늘게 하지만 열정을 가진 마음을 시들게 하지는 못한다. 고뇌, 공포, 실망 때문에 기력이 땅으로 들어갈 때, 비로소 마음이 시들어 버리는 것이다. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living.     육십 세이든 십육 세이든 모든 사람의 가슴 속에는 놀라움에 끌리는 마음, 젖먹이 아이와 같은 미지에 대한 끝없는 탐구심, 삶에서 환희를 얻고자 하는 열망이 있는 법이다. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receive messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men from the infinite, so long are you young.  그대와 나의 가슴 속에는 남에게 잘 보이지 않는 그 무엇이 간직되어 있다. 아름다움, 희망, 용기, 영원의 세계에서 오는 힘. 이 모든 것을 간직하고 있는 한 언제까지 그대는 젊음을 유지할 것이다. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with the snows of cynicism  and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.  영감이 끊어져 정신이 냉소라는 눈에 파묻히고, 비탄이란 얼음에 갇힌 사람은 비록 나이가 이십세라 할지라도 이미 늙은이와 다름없다. 그러나, 머리를 드높여 희망이란 파도를 탈 수 있는 한 그대는 팔십세 일지라도 영원한 청춘의 소유자일 것이다.         ** Samuel Ulman이 쓴 이 "청춘"이라는 시(詩)는 맥아더 장군(General Douglas MacArthur 1880∼1964)이 애송하였던 시다. 그는 이 시를 남달리 좋아하여 평소에 만나는 사람들에게 소개하곤 하였다고 한다. 그가 미국 육군사관학교인 West Point에서 행한 고별사의 한 구절인 “노병(老兵)은 죽지 않는다. 다만 사라질 뿐이다(Old soldiers never die; they just fade away).”는 구절도 이 시에서 얻은 영감이 기초를 이루고 있다고 전해진다.
