롱펠로우의  인생 찬가
   A Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

 

  롱펠로우(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: 1807~1882)는
19세기 최고의 시인으로 알려져 있습니다.
그의 시는 너무나 아름다운 구절로 가득 차 있지만
그의 인생은 그렇게 아름다운 일만으로
가득 차 있었던 것이 아닙니다.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow(1807~1882)

is known as one of the best poets in the 19^th century.

His poem is full of so many beautiful phrases,

but his life was not full of such lovely things at all.

누구 못지않게 쓰라린 경험을 맛본 사람입니다.
그에게 두 아내가 있었습니다.
첫 아내는 결혼한 얼마 후에 오랫동안 앓다가
젊은 나이에 세상을 떠났습니다.
그리고 새로 얻은 재혼한 아내 역시 결혼한 지
몇 년 안 된 어느 날 부엌에서 화재사고를 당해
화상을 입고 앓다가 세상을 떠나고 말았습니다.
He is one of the men who have experienced bitter things in his life.

During his life, he had two wives.

The first wife had suffered with grave illness after marriage for a long time

and died when she was still young.

Then his second wife had a terrible accident with fire in her kitchen

only after a few years of marriage

and she died after suffering the sickness of the burn.

  
롱펠로우가 75세가 되어
그의 임종이 가까운 어느 날
어떤 기자가 그를 찾아가 물었습니다.
A reporter visited Longfellow

and asked him at the last moments of his life

when he was aged 75

"선생님은 두 부인의 사별뿐 아니라
여러 가지 많은 고통을 겪으며
살아오신 것으로 알고 있습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 선생님께서는
어떻게 그토록 아름다운 시들을 쓸 수가 있었습니까."
” I know that you have lost two wives and

have experienced so many bitter sufferings in your life.

How could you write so beautiful poems in spite of such bitter experiences? ”

  
롱펠로우는 마당에 서 있는 사과나무를 가리키며 말했습니다.
Then Longfellow said by indicating an apple tree in the garden

 
"저 나무가 나의 스승이었습니다.
저 사과나무는 몹시 늙었습니다.
그러나 해마다 꽃이 피고 열매가 열립니다.
옛 가지에서 새 가지가 조금씩 나오기 때문입니다.
나도 생명의 주 예수 그리스도에게서
새 생명을 끊임 없이 공급받아
인생의 새로운 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺으며 살아왔습니다"
”The tree was my teacher.

The apple tree is too old.

Yet it still blooms flowers and bears fruits ever year.

And new branches grow out from the old branches.

I have been supplied with the new life from my Lord Jesus Christ continuously

and have lived my life by blooming new flowers and bearing fruits.”

롱펠로우가 아내를 잃은 아픔을 간직한 채
   쓴 시가 바로 "인생 찬가(A Psalm of Life)" 라는 시입니다.     

                                                             The very poem Longfellow wrote by keeping

내게 말하지 말라, 슬픈 곡조로                                                            Tell me not in mournful numbers, 
"인생은 허망한 꿈일 뿐이다"라고                                                         Life is but an empty dream! 
잠자는 영혼은 죽은 것이요,                                                                For the soul is dead that slumbers,
사물은 겉보기와 같지 않다.                                                                And things are not what they seem.

인생은 현실! 인생은 진지한 것!                                                            Life is real! Life is earnest!
무덤이 그 종말이 아니다.                                                                   And the grave is not its goal;
"너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가라"는 것은                                                  Dust thou are, to dust thou returnest,
영혼을 가리켜 한 말이 아니다.                                                            Was not spoken of the soul.

우리들의 정해진 목적지나 길은                                                           Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
즐거움도 아니고 슬픔도 아니다.                                                          Is our destined end or way;

내일 우리 모두는 오늘보다                                                                 But to act, that each tomorrow
발전하도록 행동함을 알아야하나니,                                                     Find us farther than today.
예술은 길고, 시간은 쏜살같은 것                                                         Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
우리의 심장이 튼튼하고 굳세어도,                                                       And our hearts, though stout and brave,
덮씌워져 소리 낮은 북소리처럼                                                           Still, like muffled drums, are beating
무덤 향한 장송곡을 치고 있다.                                                            Funeral marches to the grave.

이 넓은 세상 싸움터에서,                                                                   In the world's broad field of battle,
이 생의 야영장에서,                                                                          In the bivouac of Life,
말못하고 쫓기는 소같이 되지 말라!                                                      Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
투쟁에서 살아남는 영웅이 되라!                                                          Be a hero in the strife!

화려할지라도 미래를 믿지 말라                                                           Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! 
죽은 과거는 죽은 것으로 묻어버려라!                                                   Let the dead Past bury its dead!
행동하라, 살아 있는 현재에 행동하라!                                                  Act, - act in the living Present!

내 안에는 꿋꿋함, 그리고 위에는 하나님!                                              Heart within, and God o'erhead!
위대한 사람의 일생은 우리를 일깨우고                                                 Lives of great men all remind us
우리의 일생을 숭고하게 만듦을,                                                          We can make our lives sublime,
그리고 이 세상을 떠나도 우리들 뒤에                                                   And, departing, leave behind us
시간의 모래 위에 발자취 남길 수 있음을.                                              Footprints on the sand of time;

모래 위에 남은 그 발자취, 아마도 뒷날 다른 이가                                   Footprints, that perhaps another,
인생의 엄숙한 큰 바다를 항해하다                                                       Sailing o'er life's solenm main,
난파하여 버려진 형제가                                                                     A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, 
그것보고, 다시 힘을 얻을 것이다.                                                        Seeing, shall take heart again.

그리하여 우리 일어나 활동하자,                                                          Let us then be up and doing,
어떠한 운명에도 굴하지 않고                                                              With a heart for any fate;
언제나 성취하고, 언제나 추구하며,                                                      Still achieving, still pursuing,
땀 흘려 일하고 기다리는 법을 배우라.                                                  Learn to labor and to wait.

 

우리는 뒤로 물러가 멸망할 자가 아니요                                         But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition;

오직 영혼을 구원함에 이르는 믿음을 가진 자니라 [히 10:39]             but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.(Hebrew 10:39)
